“Our job, as caring owners and trainers, is to show the dog that it is
to his or her advantage to comply willingly with our requests, thereby
making both dog and owner feel like winners.”
At Common Scents Canine Center, we are often asked
by prospective clients why they should enroll in our programs when
there are many community programs in the area who offer obedience
classes for less money. Good question.
Common Scents offers professionally prepared
programs from beginner through advanced levels. These programs are
formulated to take into account the developmental stages from puppy to
adulthood, and have the built in flexibility to deal with a wide range
of canine temperaments and personalities.

| Our highly
qualified instructors all have a foundation in animal behavior,
enabling them to help owners deal with both “normal”, but unwanted
behaviors, such as chewing, nipping and jumping, and the more difficult
“abnormal” problems, such as aggression and separation anxiety.
Extensive written handouts, detailing both lecture topics and
exercises, are part of the program.
From a behavioral perspective, the keys to a
well-adjusted pet are self confidence and acceptance of authority.
Self confidence is developed through proper
socialization. All programs at Common Scents are formulated to help
each dog develop its social skills. Contact with both other dogs and
people is kept in a positive framework under tightly controlled and
safe guidelines to promote only positive experiences.
Control over a pet is established by teaching it
to accept the owner’s authority. Response to a command is merely a
learned action; acceptance of the owner’s commands as a requirement is
the real issue. Instruction at Common Scents is designed to teach the
dog that it is to its advantage to respond to the owner’s request. This
is done by means of positive reinforcement (food and praise); we do not
advocate yelling, hitting, yanking, or grabbing. The result is a pet
that is willing to respond without threat or intimidation.
Common Scents also provides facilities for an
optimum learning environment. In addition to a modern 3200 square foot
indoor training center, we also offer beautifully groomed and fully
fenced outdoor areas. Weather permitting, much of our training is
conducted outdoors. This helps ensure that your dog will respond in a
more realistic setting where the distraction of other dogs, people, and
great smells compete for your attention.
Finally, we don’t think it’s fair for clients to
struggle with questions from one week to the next. Instructors at
Common Scents are available six days a week for help by phone. For more
difficult issues, private consultations are available.
